Business Support Network

This project aims to create an enterprise culture within the local community and provide local people with an opportunity to consider self-employment as a career path. The project aims to both maintain current job opportunities and create new employment in the local area which will aid in its future economic sustainability, and bring about a positive regenerative change.

The project will sit alongside and complement the traditional business and enterprise support services provided by the Local Authority and other organisations.

The South Cluster Business Support Network will be further developed to provide a people orientated Enterprise Facilitation service that will offer generic business development support through engaging with and developing potential social enterprises and small to medium sized businesses.

The role of the development officer will be to take on a role of a facilitator to;

  • Provide an informal, people-orientated enterprise development function that creates and supports a culture of entrepreneurship whilst helping the community to create and support its own businesses and jobs
  • Assist potential entrepreneurs in identifying their needs and linking them to key resources within the Councils Economic Development Team
  • Establish an effective referral and communications system for the benefit s of clients and wider partners
  • Establish a local support network, which may be able to assist the client with certain aspects of their business; be that production, advertising, distribution or any business function.
  • Acts as a friendly mentor who is able to identify with the client and understand their goals and ambitions, and help the client understand how best to reach those goals.

The facilitator is not an expert but someone who is a good listener, supportive, well-networked and able to evaluate the skills and needs of the entrepreneurs.

The project will be based in the southern cluster targeting developing social enterprises such as:

  • Childcare provisions
  • Youth Settings
  • Community Buildings
  • As well as those SE’s developing alternative renewal energy such as:
  • Bedlinog Community Wind farm
  • Taff Bargoed Micro Hydro Project

And individuals looking to become self-employed.
