Community Career Clubs

This project aims to meet the needs of age 25+ working age adults in the cluster who are actively seeking employment and require additional support to secure a position.

Engaging adults on JSA, those wishing to enter employment, those who are currently economically inactive or those in low paid positions looking to progress in their careers. This intervention is targeted at adults who are job ready and require specific support to improve presentation skills, refine job searches, and acquire extra vocational skills or qualifications to secure a job. Participation in the Career Club is entirely voluntary and does not affect participants benefit entitlements.

Listed below are some activities and projects that Communities First will deliver:

  • CV assistance – one-to-one sessions with clients from JCP referrals and drop-in enquiries.
  • Interview skills – preparing individuals for the interview environment
  • Job Club – general job searches, advice and guidance
  • Basic IT (Including setting up e-mail addresses, accessing government gateway and universal jobmatch.

The career clubs are delivered in community venues across the cluster in:

  • Merthyr Vale
  • Treharris
  • Bedlinog
  • Troedyrhiw

At these venues job seekers have access to IT facilities to conduct job searches and research, to send emails, access career advice, be assisted in creating a CV, identifying further training needs, business start-up and finding work based learning placements.

The career club also offers workshops facilitated by trainers helping with interview skills, creating power point presentations, developing a career path, public speaking, crash courses in computer literacy and so on when required

Each job seeker is invited to complete a baseline assessment and identify needs to access employment. The project allows for individual training and acquisition of accredited qualifications if these are identified as barriers preventing the job seeker from gaining an advertised post. We help the job seeker to find work placements, work experience or volunteering opportunities in work places to gain experience or help with career direction and choices.

Currently we have 41 people involved in this project 6 are now employed
